Le Musée Maillol et l’agence Tempora présentent, à partir du 27 avril 2024, une exposition de photographies de l’artiste Andres Serrano pour mieux comprendre une Amérique engagée dans une bataille électorale cruciale pour son avenir.
Davantage qu’un photographe, Andres Serrano peut être considéré comme un « artiste avec un appareil photo » ainsi qu’il se définit lui-même. À travers ses photographies soigneusement mises en scène, il révèle de l’Amérique une réalité souvent dérangeante. La religion, la mort, le sexe, la politique, la pauvreté ou la violence imprègnent l’œuvre de l’artiste américain. Autant de facettes d’une Amérique à la fois monumentale dans son triomphalisme et fragile dans ses contradictions.
Maître du portrait, Serrano magnifie l’individu contemporain en s’appuyant sur la culture classique, particulièrement la peinture ancienne, mise au service d’un sacré désormais mâtiné de pop culture. Le regard du photographe a l’efficacité du revolver braqué sur une société schizophrène dont Donald Trump est devenu à la fois le symptôme et l’emblème et qui occupera une place obsédante dans le propos de l’exposition du Musée Maillol.
Provocateur pour d’aucuns, témoin objectif du monde pour d’autres, Andres Serrano met volontiers l’accent sur les tabous que veut dissimuler une Amérique puritaine. Certains de ses clichés, susceptibles de choquer et parfois vandalisés lors de précédentes expositions, seront donc présentés dans un espace dédié. Au total, le visiteur découvrira 89 œuvres emblématiques des différents thèmes abordés par l’artiste.
